Early to Mid Fall at The Battery 2018

This final post from my horticulture internship at The Battery Conservancy comprises Early Fall (September 21 to October 20) and a bit of Mid Fall (October 21 to November 20). As my internship ended October 31, I only got a peak at the beauty of Piet Oudolf's garden in the fall, which I hear is the best time. These final pictures document the transition from summer to winter. Some plants fade, leaving only the desiccated flower stems, while others (like the ornamental grasses and the ever-present Symphyotrichum 'October Skies') reach their peak. Before the first frost and the later ground freeze, we do our final bits of dividing and transplanting.

Towards the end of October, we planted thousands of bulbs throughout the gardens. I took a tour of the Bikeway gardens as the gardeners identified shrubs. You will notice that in the final weeks, I took a lot of photographs in the morning when the light is soft and warm. Living in New York City can seem claustrophobic at times. Without the large expanses of water and greenery, your mind and body are restless. One of my favorite parts of working at The Battery Conservancy is being surrounded by both plants and water. My face got a lovely tan during the alternating hot and cool days of the autumn.Sure it got hectic at times; 5 million tourists per year on their way to the Statue of Liberty, the Staten Island Ferry, Wall Street, the Wall Street Bull and the World Trade Center Memorial is nothing to sneeze at. I had a wonderful time working at The Battery Conservancy and look forward to visiting the gardens and my friends many more times.
