Large Watercolors Early 2018

The following is a series of large watercolor and gouache paintings began in January 2018. It has been a long time since I have painted (as I mentioned on my previous post on art) and it takes me months now to produce the same amount that I used to make in a few weeks. A big issue is discipline. I struggle with discipline. When I was a little girl, I used to make art with my grandmother, Katherine Kilgore. As I got older, the art-making transferred to the classroom. Teachers set the assignments and I became increasingly passive in my approach to art making. Now that I am (finally) done with school, I have to regain the momentum from my childhood.

It's similar to exercise: kids love to run and ride bikes and jump around. When we get older, we have to force ourselves to go to the gym, ride a bike, go running. It's torturous to get out there and take those first steps. But when we finally do it, we feel good. Afterwards, we feel great. We wonder, what was I avoiding this whole time? It's the same with art, or any hobby. On my evenings and days off, all I want to do is veg out, look at funny memes on Instagram, or listen to videos on YouTube. But after a few hours of this, I feel disgusted, like I am wasting my life. By contrast, I NEVER feel this way after making art. After reading Jordan Peterson's book "12 Rules for Life", which speaks about the virtues of routine and self-discipline, I realized that I had to trick myself into making art. I tell myself: If I paint for thirty minutes, I will have a delicious ice tea that I just brewed. Or, I will drink my delicious ice tea while I make this painting. Or, I will listen to something I enjoy while I draw.

The results are promising, although I am taking the babiest of baby steps, and there is still a mountain to climb.

These watercolors are inspired by imagery in books that I have read, my growing houseplant collection and from my imagination.
